Classroom Management
As students work on the lessons individually or in pairs, your role will be to circulate throughout the classroom to observe their work and answer their questions. Students will work at their own pace and finish the lessons at different times, so it is important to prepare what they will do next ahead of time. Here are some options:
- When a few students have finished, take them aside and review their answers to the final interactive activity. Discuss what they’ve learned and what they might focus on for their final assignment. The Teacher’s Guide includes suggested questions for discussion. When the next small group is ready, the first group of students can go back to their computers or another area to work on their final assignment while you have a discussion with the next group. This can continue until all students have had a chance to reflect on their learning and to begin thinking about their final assignments.
- If the self-paced lesson has been content review rather than new learning, you may want to instruct students to begin working on their final assignments as soon as they each finish the lesson.
- If you would like to meet as a whole class to discuss the lesson and prepare students to work on the final assignment, have another assignment prepared for students to work on while they wait for all of their classmates to finish.
Now, consider the lesson that you selected. How might you organize the students’ activities after they have finished the lesson? What support might you need to provide for a wide range of student needs? Write your answer below.
