For the YSU project, you need to choose a goal that will result in civic action rather than community service. What’s the difference? Start by watching this video.
Civic action is different from community service. Both are important, but where community service helps soften the symptoms of a problem, civic action looks for the reason that the problem is happening and tries to address that. Consider this example:
| Keyboard Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Space | Pause/Play video playback |
| Enter | Pause/Play video playback |
| m | Mute/Unmute video volume |
| Up and Down arrows | Increase and decrease volume by 10% |
| Right and Left arrows | Seek forward or backward by 5 seconds |
| 0-9 | Fast seek to x% of the video. |
| f | Enter or exit fullscreen. (Note: To exit fullscreen in flash press the Esc key. |
| c | Press c to toggle captions on or off |
| Food Insecurity |
| Community Service: Hold a bake sale at school and donate the money we raise to the local food bank. |
| Civic Action: Start a petition to open a food pantry in our neighborhood that operates year-round with funding provided, in part, from city government. |
Here are the project goals you brainstormed earlier:
With your group, discuss which of your possible project goals are community service goals and which are civic action goals. Write your answers below.
