In this lesson you use charts and captions. Both are tools to help readers understand what they read. Charts can show information in a simple way. Captions explain in a few words what is happening in text, illustrations, photographs and even videos. Charts and captions are reading shortcuts!

Encourage your child to create and write captions that have even more information than what the photograph shows. Here are three ideas:

Take family photos or videos, add captions about what is happening in the photo, and send them to friends and family!

Make drawings and add captions and labels that help make your drawings tell a deeper story than what meets the eye.

Make your favorite recipe into a picture recipe by taking a picture of each step of the recipe and re-writing the recipe steps as captions for your photos.
