A magnet can push things without even touching it! How does it do that? A magnet is a rock that contains small pieces of magnetite, which is a mineral. This mineral can push and pull things that get close to it. Magnets come in all shapes and sizes.
How can a magnet push or pull something without touching it? Magnets have a field, similar to a force field. Hold a magnet under a tray filled with metal shavings. You will be able to see the magnetic field around the magnet. The shavings will be pushed away from the magnet.
Every magnet has two magnetic poles. One end is the north pole. The other end is the south pole. The north pole of a magnet attracts(pulls) the south pole of another magnet. But the north poles of two magnets push (repel) each other away. The push and pull is called a magnetic force.
