A magnet can
push things without touching it. A magnet can
pull things without touching it too. How does it do that? A magnet is a rock that has small pieces
of
magnetite in it.
Magnetite
is a
mineral. This mineral pushes and pulls things near it. Magnets come in all
shapes. They can be many sizes.
How do magnets push or pull something without touching it? Magnets have a field. Think of a force field. Hold a magnet under a tray
filled with metal
shavings. You will see the magnetic field. The shavings will
be pushed away from the magnet. Move the magnet. The field will move too.
Every magnet has two
magnetic poles. One end is the north pole. The other end is
the south pole. The north pole of a magnet attracts (pulls) the south pole of another magnet. But the north poles of two magnets push
(repel) each other away. The push and pull is called a
magnetic force.
