The Iterative Process
Now that students have tested and evaluated their designs, the iterative half of the engineering design process begins. The mechanics of the design steps don’t change significantly when iterated, so the next two pages will highlight how to maximize the impact of iteration.
- Sharing solutions helps students use data analysis to inform their redesign. Reflect on the sharing step at the beginning of the second water filter video. How did the group share help the students in their redesign?
- Celebrating the success of other groups can help motivate students through the iterative process, even if their group didn’t succeed in meeting the criterion.

Never use the world failure when discussing the students’ designs! Instead, ask students to determine if their design met the criteria and to think of ways to improve their design.
