In this step, students build their designs. Building, testing, and evaluating their designs are usually the students’ favorite parts of the design process.
Teamwork and materials management are especially important (and can be challenging) during this phase of the engineering design process. You will learn more about these topics in the second module in this series, Implementing the Engineering Design Process.
If students want to change their design as they build (and create something that is different from what they had originally designed), give them permission only if their decision is based on evidence or data they have collected. If they make changes during the build process, they must go back and record the new plan on their design template.
