The Republican Party was formed in 1854. It became known as the “Party of Lincoln,” which won the Civil War, freed enslaved people, oversaw Reconstruction, and secured ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. In addition, during the Civil War, Republicans passed the following:

Republican Senator John Sherman “waves the bloody shirt” to remind voters that the Republican Party fought and won the Civil War, saved the Union, and ended slavery, thus deserving their continued support.

Business Leaders: The Republican Party supported policies that developed and expanded the nation, providing new opportunities for business investment and development.
