Children should read more during the summer, not less! When students stop reading, for even a few weeks, they lose valuable skills. This loss is often called ‘summer slide’ because children must re-learn lost skills when they go back to school after summer vacation.
Children need a break from school but do not need a break from reading! Kids love the summertime, but when they get bored, try to redirect them to something that helps them practice reading. It is easy to give a book to a child who likes to read, but for those kids that would rather play than read, use some of the ideas from this lesson to make reading practice happen without making it feel like work!
