The First Telephone Call
Have you heard of Alexander Graham Bell? He invented something most of us use everyday. He invented the telephone.
Bell became interested in communication because his mother could not hear, she was deaf. People communicated with her through sign
language. Bell wanted to help everyone communicate better. While doing some experiments, Bell discovered that speech patterns could
be sent in electric waves. Bell and his partner, Thomas Watson, then invented the telephone in 1876. The first words ever spoken
over a telephone were "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you." Their invention worked!
It was many years before the telephone was commonly used. Many homes did not have a telephone until the early 1930s. If we did not
have this invention, we might be writing letters instead of talking on the phone.
