Read It!
Authors write for different purposes.
|
Sometimes authors write to inform the reader which we call informational text. Sometimes an author writes to entertain the reader. This
type of writing may still provide some information but it is usually more entertaining.
Read the two texts below to see if you can tell the difference between narrative text and informational text. When you have finished reading, click

On the Move!
What makes your skateboard move? What makes your chair move? Things cannot move without help! It takes a force to make something move. A push or a pull is called a force. A push moves things away from you. A pull moves things toward you. You push a grocery cart to make it move. You pull a wagon to make it move.
How big something is, or how heavy it is makes a difference. It takes a lot more force to push a bowling ball. It takes less force to push a ping pong ball. The shape of an object also can make a difference. It will take more force to push a box full of books than it will to push a baseball across the floor.
Force can change the direction something is moving. Think about playing putt putt golf. You use the putter to push the ball into motion. If the ball hits the wall or an obstacle it will change the direction of the golf ball. When the ball rolls into the hole it stops the ball’s motion.
When you climb to the top of a slide, what makes you go down? If you stand at the top of the stairs and drop a ball, what makes it fall to the ground instead of floating away? There is another force that makes things move. That force is called gravity. Gravity pulls objects down to the earth.
As you go about your day today, think about all the force you use. How many things will you move today?
On the Move!
Oh my, winter is coming! I am very worried. It looks like it will snow any minute now! I have got to hurry and get these nuts stored
away safely or I will starve to death! I don’t want to starve! I like eating! Not to mention, I want to survive the winter!
I have been climbing up this tree, pushing and pulling acorns into my nest all day long! I am very tired and cold!
Oh no! The snow is starting! The snowflakes are as big as snowballs! At this rate the ground will be covered in no time! Once the
ground is covered I won’t be able to find the acorns! Hurry, hurry, scurry, scurry! Bushy tailed squirrel on the move! Whooosh.
The wind is getting stronger. The tree branches are swaying and bending from the force of the wind! Crack!
Oh no! The tree is falling! Crash!! My wonderful nest is on the ground! My winter food is rolling down the hill! I think I am going to cry!
I have to be calm. Take a deep breath! Think! Think! I have to save my nest! But how? It is too big! There is no way I can push it to the top of a different tree. All I need is a rope and some friends!
