About squirrels...
Squirrels are quick climbers, with sturdy claws and flexible joints for scaling trees, thats where they find their favorite foods: nuts and seeds. Squirrels are known for storing food in the fall to eat throughout the winter and spring. We don’t know how squirrels find the food they’ve buried – but many scientists believe that squirrels have a mechanism for remembering where they left it. Still, squirrels lose almost 25 percent of the food they hide because it's picked up by other squirrels! Some squirrels dig and pretend to bury nuts in order to throw off potential thieves. Have you every wondered why squirrels run in a zig- zag pattern, i'ts a safety mechanism, allowing them them to throw off potential predators.

Meet the squirrel...
"What’s that? Who’s there? Ah! Stay away from my food stash, you! I’ve been running back and forth and back and forth all year to save up enough for winter! In fact, I wrote a little song about it!
(Sung to the tune of I’ve Been Working on the Railroad)
I've been working on my food stash
All the autumn long Adding to my nut and fruit cache While I sing my squirrel song! Can't you hear the acorns dropping?
Run down and catch them as they fall. Can't you hear the seeds a-popping? I'll have quite a haul! Winter winds can blow,
I know where to go, Under the ice and snow-oh-oh! In trees and underground Buried all around My seeds and nuts are safe and sound!" |
