What Makes Water Freeze?
There are different states of matter. The water in a glass sitting on the table is in a liquid state. If you put the glass in the freezer what will happen? The water in the glass will freeze. It will become a solid. It will change into one giant ice cube! If you take the glass out of the freezer what happens? It will melt. If you leave it out for a long time, it will disappear. It doesn't really disappear. It changes from a liquid to a gas. This is called evaporation.
Water and Weather!
Water will freeze at 32 degrees F. If the air temperature is below 32 degrees F the water in the clouds will freeze. This is how we get snow! If the ground is cold enough, the rain can freeze and turn into ice. If the air temperature is above 32 degrees then the water will fall as liquid rain drops.
After it rains, the ground is wet. It won't stay wet forever. After the rain stops the water begins to evaporate. The water changes from liquid to a gas. The gas drifts away in the air.
Why is there so much ice in Antarctica?
Why is there so much ice in Antarctica? Why doesn't it snow much near the equator? Why don't polar bears and penguins live in Florida? It all comes down to the temperature! If the temperature stays below 32 degrees for a long time there will plenty of ice and snow to keep the polar bears and penguins happy!
