There are three states of matter. They are solid, liquid and gas.

Solids are made of atoms or molecules that are closely packed together. They are packed so tightly that they cannot move very much. They cannot slide past one another. They keep their shape.

The molecules in liquids are not so close together. They can slide past one another. Liquids flow and take the shape of their container.

In a gas, molecules are far apart from one another. There is empty space between them. Molecules in gases are free to bounce and move around. They will fill a container or float away in open spaces.
