Read all about it! What is air? When you have finished reading, click =CONTINUE=>.
It's hard to imagine that air is matter. Matter is something that has mass and takes up space. Air is invisible. It does not seem to take up space. It does not seem to have mass. For years, people didn't even know that air existed. Air does take up space, but we can’t see it. Air does have mass, but we can't feel it. We can observe that air has both volume and weight.
We can't see air, but that doesn’t mean that air is empty. All things are made of atoms. Air is made up of atoms too. Air has nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Air also has carbon and hydrogen atoms.
It is surprising that air has mass. It is above our heads. Air has tremendous pressure, but we cannot feel it. We do not pay attention to this pressure. We have always lived under this pressure.
We can see and feel signs of the air around us. We can see air when we blow up a balloon. We can feel air on our skin when it is windy outside. We can hear the air blowing.
