As you have seen and read in this lesson, there is a lot to think about when you choose something to eat. Food labels have a lot of information, but you have to read them carefully. In this activity, you will look for foods that have less than 20% of their calories from fat and/or sugar.
Each gram of fat has 9 calories, and each gram of sugar has 4 calories. Here’s how to figure out a food's calorie count:
25 Pretzels: 120 calories, 2 grams fat, 0 grams sugar
2 grams fat x 9 calories per gram of fat = 18 calories
0 grams sugar x 4 calories per gram of sugar = 0 calories
Now you will use the same process to look at other foods to figure out if they have fewer than 20% calories from fat and/or sugar. Click the button below to begin the activity. Your teacher will review the answers with you.
After you have completed the activity, but before moving on to the final assignment, you may want to watch this lesson's videos again or reread Why Is It Called 2% Milk? (PDF).
