The Solubility Pump
The solubility pump is one of the two ways carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide, or CO2) is moved through the ocean and back into the atmosphere. The solubility pump utilizes ocean temperatures, deep currents, and upwelling.
Watch the video to learn about how the solubility pump works. As you watch, pay attention to the flow of the pump. Think about how the carbon is transferred from the atmosphere into the ocean, through the ocean, and then released back into the atmosphere.
