Design Squad Latinx Conceptual Framework

In a strengths-based approach to engineering, kids are able to use their funds of knowledge within the engineering and design process. This allows kids to tap into their existing social, cultural, and historical resources in new, productive, and meaningful ways, connecting learning that happens at home and in their communities to engineering activities.

To apply a strengths-based approach to engineering and bring out your club participants’ funds of knowledge, you can use the Design Squad Latinx Conceptual Framework. The steps of the framework are as follows:

  1. Discover It - Uncovering their funds of knowledge (club leader asking kids questions to elicit their funds of knowledge)
  2. Value It - Recognizing and appreciating their funds of knowledge (club leader support and recognition throughout club sessions)
  3. Apply It - Using their funds of knowledge to tackle engineering design challenges (kids application during engineering activities)
