Latinx and other marginalized communities are often not seen as holders of valuable knowledge and resources, so when Latinx kids enter educational programs (particularly in the STEM field), they are frequently assumed to be missing valuable knowledge, with their weaknesses often emphasized over their strengths. While unfortunately prevalent, these assumptions are misguided and uninformed! There are many examples of talented Latinx engineers whose histories and achievements are not always recognized or studied in school.
People often tend to think in very narrow terms about the kinds of skills and knowledge that contribute to excellent engineering outcomes, without acknowledging the value that cultural and community knowledge adds to STEM education. Design Squad Latinx is using a strengths-based approach to engineering. A strengths-based approach is all about valuing and applying the strengths and abilities you have from your family, community, culture, and lived experience (your funds of knowledge) to many aspects of life, including tackling engineering challenges.
