Many farmers chose to organize and take political action to improve their conditions on the Great Plains. One group that advocated for farmers’ rights was the Populist Party. Mary E. Lease, who had been known for championing women’s rights, the suffrage movement, and labor unions, eventually became a proponent of farmers’ rights.
