As the Moon moves deeper into Earth’s umbra, the illuminated portion becomes even smaller. The partial stages of a total lunar eclipse last for about an hour. The darkened part of the Moon in Earth’s shadow may look dimly red as some filtered sunlight reaches it; however, it looks mostly black because of the contrast with the part of the Moon that is still brightly lit.
