REACH FOR MORE! Fun things to do, chosen for you!
Sing and Play! Using magnetic letters on a refrigerator or vinyl letters in the bathtub, scramble the letters, then see how quickly you can put them in alphabetical order while singing the alphabet song! Challenge: Sing faster and faster each time you play!
Read, Sing, Read! Read a book aloud several times until it seems easy to read. Then sing the book using your own tune. Then read the book again to see if you can read it more easily and smoothly. Challenge: Record your book by singing the story into a microphone or making a book reading video.
Make Reading Musical! Make musical instruments from materials found around the house. Children can play their instruments as they sing and as they read. Try putting on a family reading concert!
Make a Banjo: Use an empty box of tissues, shoe box bottom, or other available box or container. Stretch four or five rubber bands of different widths over the opening of the box. Pluck to play. Play a sound every time you read a word!
Make Shakers: Use clean, empty containers with lids like: plastic ware, water bottles, or clean milk or juice cartons. Put a spoonful of beads, buttons, paper clips, dried beans, dry pasta, or rice inside. Close the lid or seal the container with tape to help keep it closed. Shake and dance while you read!
Make a Drum: You can use recycled objects like old boxes, paint cans or plastic ware to make a drum. Or try drumming with your hands on a plastic bucket or dishpan, a metal pot, or other objects. Make a beat for the words you are reading!
