More For Parents! Here are some teaching tips for you!
Try Poetry!
Early readers need experiences with words that create mental images, connect with their senses, and touch their emotions. Reading poetry together is a good way to gain these experiences.
Find books of poetry to read together aloud, or write your own poems. Talk about each poem’s meaning, illustrate the poems, and even memorize the words! Poetry helps teach basic reading skills and can be fun the whole family.
Try Writing! Writing together is a great way to help early readers grow stronger reading skills. Practice by writing stories about each of the five senses. Here is a list of words that can be used to write about the five senses:
Sight – dim shiny clear colorful foggy beautiful bright sparkly dark
Smell – sour sweet flowery tart bitter stinky smelly spicy fruity
Hear –buzz echo boom whispering crunching screech howl bark meow
Touch –fuzzy smooth itchy slimy slippery bumpy flaky soft cold
Taste – crunchy hot bitter sweet sour moldy spicy fruity
