Before we dive in, take this short true-false quiz to see what you might already know and think about engineering.
Hopefully that quiz got you thinking about engineering and some common engineering misconceptions. We’ll come back to a few of those concepts shortly, but first off, it is important to note that you DO NOT need to be a science educator or engineering expert to successfully facilitate kid-centered engineering activities. Your approach to facilitation, as opposed to your scientific knowledge and engineering expertise, is what’s key.
At first, many kids may not be able to define engineering or explain what an engineer does. Participating in Design Squad Latinx will change that and the following kid-friendly definition will help: Engineering is a process of developing solutions to problems.
As club members experience the fun and excitement of engineering firsthand, they begin to see the possibilities of engineering in their own lives. These moments are great opportunities to talk to them about engineering and careers.
