As a club leader, it’s important to provide frequent time and space for kids to reflect on their funds of knowledge (and for you to share about yours!). Although we encourage you to do this at any point throughout club sessions, we find that pláticas are a particularly good time for this.
Pláticas, or “friendly conversations,” occur at the beginning and end of each session. Bring your whole club together for a conversation about their experiences. During pláticas, ask explicit questions to elicit kids’ funds of knowledge. When kids share, make sure to acknowledge and validate their funds of knowledge.
TIP: Some kids might feel uncomfortable talking about their funds of knowledge with peers and in front of the whole group, so we find that individual reflection and voluntary sharing of strengths works best.
