Wind tunnels simulate wind conditions in a controlled environment. Engineers use wind tunnel testing as a method to model the effects of wind on buildings. Wind tunnel tests help to make sure that a structure can withstand high winds of all types, and that the design will prevent excessive swaying to maintain the comfort of the people inside.
The wind tunnel depicted in the photo above and the image to the left consists of many pieces that can be removed or rearranged. Instead of a single large fan, there are 64 individual fans, which allow engineers to model many different types and directions of wind.
