Visit Sumatra! Look at a map of Indonesia online and see if you can locate the island of Sumatra on the map.
- Would you want to visit Sumatra? Discuss how you would get to Sumatra (car, airplane, boat?) and what you would take with you on your trip. Research the island and create a travel brochure.
- Palm is a crop grown in Sumatra. Investigate palm oil online to find what items in our homes contain palm oil. Then go on a scavenger hunt. Read the ingredients of things found in your home and see if you can locate any items that contain palm oil on the ingredients label.
Name some animals that live near your home. Talk about how these animals survive in your neighborhood. Where do they find food, water, shelter and space to live?
Create your own animal – a new kind of animal! Draw the creature and talk about how it finds food, uses its habitat for shelter and space, finds water, and interacts with other creatures. Don’t forget to come up with a creative name for your creature! Head outdoors with your drawing and locate the ideal habitat for your creature in your neighborhood. Make up a name for your creature’s habitat. Next, create a book educating the world of about this new creature and how it survives in its habitat. CHALLENGE: Make a puppet or a model of your animal creature!
