How Beavers Build Dams
Beavers are great engineers! Beavers seem to be born already knowing how to make dams. Beavers naturally know how to weave sticks to make the dam strong. Beavers also know how to use mud to seal the dam and make it watertight. Mud keeps water from getting through. With these well engineered dams, beavers can change the habitats of both animals and humans.
Beavers can build dams on a stream of water. The dam will cause the water to collect and make a pond. The pond can get deep. The pond can keep a beaver safe from predators. The pond helps a beaver survive. The pond can also become a home for other animals like ducks, geese, turtles and frogs.
Humans can also build dams. But humans have to go to school to learn how to build dams. When humans build dams they can hurt animal habitats. When beavers build dams they can create new habitats.
