When a person develops a substance use disorder, his or her family and friends are impacted. Fear of overdose or jail for their loved one and other negative effects of drug addiction can be devastating for families. Helping someone through the recovery process can also be long and frustrating.
More than 60% of people treated for a substance use disorder relapse—use drugs again—within the first year, and they may be at increased risk of relapse for many years.
Families in this situation are encouraged to educate themselves about the disease of substance use disorder, express their concerns to the loved one with the addiction, and connect with other families experiencing the same issue.
In this video, the Elswicks discusses their family’s experience with a substance use disorder. After you watch, list some things in the notes box that the parents did to help their son through recovery.
