Can You Live Without Texting?
This media asset is adapted from "Textaholic" by Sumayyah Hyman, Wide Angle Youth Media.
Here are some facts about texting: In 2009, the Pew Research Center found that about 88% of teens with cell phones texted, and half of them sent 50 or more texts a day—or 1,500 texts a month. Is this too much texting? The answer depends on whom you ask. Parents usually say yes; teens usually say no. Both sides can use the same fact (1,500 texts a month) to form totally different opinions. Sending 1,500 texts can seem like too much to some people, but acceptable to others.
This video shows teens talking about what they would do if there were no such thing as texting. As you watch, think about what you would do if you could not text your friends and family.
In this lesson, you will join in this texting debate, and use facts to form and support your own opinion. The lesson will use facts from the Pew Research Center study.
