National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore travels the world to take pictures of animals. He focuses on endangered species—animals whose numbers have fallen so low that they’re at risk of extinction. Joel hopes that his animal portraits will inspire people to help save these animals before it’s too late.
In this video, Joel is in Madagascar, an island nation off the east coast of Africa. Here, ecosystem changes threaten animals and humans alike. Madagascar is known for its rich biodiversity. More plant and animal species live here than in the entire African continent. However, deforestation has claimed more than half of Madagascar's original forests. This is important because nearly all of Madagascar's species either live in or rely on the trees.
