The Process: Remove, Restore, Maintain
In the video you just watched, you learned about the environmental issues created by the overgrowth of the invasive algae Lyngbya and efforts to restore the natural habitat. The video mentions two steps in the process—to remove the Lyngbya and to restore the habitat by planting Rock Star grass.
In the following reading assignment, you will learn more about these steps and also about the importance of a third step in the project—to maintain the work that has been done.

Lyngbya is harming the ecosystem in Crystal River, Kings Bay and other Florida waterways because it:
- clogs the springs and reduces water flow
- crowds out native plants that provide food and shelter to manatees, turtles, and other wildlife
- reduces oxygen and habitat for fish, shellfish, and crabs
- can be toxic when eaten by manatees or pets
- produces a “rotten egg” smell
