You now have read about the changes in U.S. immigration starting around 1870 and the growing hostility towards the “new immigrants” that resulted. You also have learned about different arguments made for and against immigration. In addition to more familiar economic, political, and cultural arguments, you learned about a new “science” called eugenics, which greatly influenced the push for restrictive immigration legislation based on a racial quota system.
In this final assessment, you will outline three arguments against passage of the Johnson-Reed Act. As you review your work, look for specific examples from the sources in this lesson to support your arguments. You may outline affirmative arguments, those that argue that immigrants are beneficial to the U.S. for a number of different reasons and so should continue to be allowed into the U.S. with few to no restrictions. You also may outline arguments that challenge or refute the negative claims made against “new immigrants” at the time.
