Line Graph
We can plot data points on a line graph to show changes over time. Once all the points of a line graph are plotted, they are connected by line segments. Because line graphs are used to show changes over time, one of the axis lines will usually show a series of dates.
For example, Ken is analyzing the performance of his landscaping company over a period of six years. In what year did Ken’s business earn the greatest amount of net income? What was the approximate net income for that year?
Step 1: Find the highest point on the graph. Follow the point down to the scale on the bottom. The highest point is above Year 4.
Step 2: Move from the highest point to the scale on the left. The point is at the first tick mark on the scale between 55 and 60. The point represents 56 thousand, or $56,000.
Answer: The best year for Ken’s business was in Year 4 when the net income was $56,000.
