Forming a Claim
Using the following thesis framework, formulate a claim that answers the essential question: Should the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico be granted statehood?
Formulate your thesis statement by acknowledging the opposing argument, stating your claim, and then supporting it using the evidence you have gathered in the most effective order. Be sure your statement answers the question and provides a roadmap for the argument you would make in a full essay response.
Here is an outline to guide the process:
Although X, Y, because a, b, and c.
X = Counterclaim
Y = Claim
a = 1st reason
b = 2nd reason
c = 3rd reason
If I wanted to argue that pizza is better than hamburgers, I could write:
Although hamburgers are delicious, pizza is better because there are so many toppings that can be included on it, there are many different types of crust, and pizza comes in a variety of sizes.
X = hamburgers are delicious
Y = pizza is better
a = there are so many toppings that can be included on it
b = there are many different types of crust
c = pizza comes in a variety of sizes
