The Growth and Persistence of Slavery
When Walker wrote the Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World in 1829, the institution of slavery was expanding, as cotton cultivation had proved to be a lucrative business. Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, South Carolina, and Florida all had become major cotton exporters.
