More for Parents! For both fiction and non-fiction, practice asking: "Why am I reading this?"
When reading fiction, readers are reading for enjoyment. A fiction text needs to be read in the order in which it is written to allow the reader to get the meaning of the text.
When reading non-fiction, readers are reading for information or to learn something. A non-fiction text may need to be read several times to get all of the information. A reader may be able to skip around in a non-fiction text to locate certain information.
When reading together at home, ask your child if the book is fiction or non-fiction. Once you find out what kinds of books your child enjoys most, take a trip to the library. Ask the librarian to show you where to find the kinds of books that your child is most likely to enjoy.
