Hummingbirds are truly unlike any other birds. Though small, their striking features are anything but subtle. Many of the most striking physical traits of hummingbirds are only possessed by males, as they serve the purpose of attracting mates.
In the images to the left, the male Volcano Hummingbird can be seen showing off its purple gorget, while the Black-Crested Coquette has an ornate crest atop its head. The distinctive colors of the Mangrove Hummingbird's feathers play a crucial role in attracting potential mates during the breeding season. The more vibrant and colorful a male bird's plumage, the more attractive it may appear to females.
