More for Parents! Here are some teaching tips for you!
Comparing and contrasting is a skill that helps early readers have greater understanding of what they read. You can work with your child’s teacher or a librarian to find books that work well to help your child compare and contrast two characters in the story. Talk about and list the things that are the same and different about the characters. Write the similarities and differences in words, and draw pictures to help your reader understand.
For struggling readers, begin by practicing with familiar books from pre-school, like picture books, nursery rhymes or Dr. Suess books.
Once your reader masters single books, try using two different books with similar types of characters to continue to practice comparing and contrasting. Practicing helps early readers have greater understanding of what they read, and with greater understanding comes greater reading enjoyment!
