Understanding word meanings helps your child comprehend what they are reading. If you come across an unfamiliar word there are several things your childcan do to figure out the meaning.
1. Look at the pictures for a clue.
2. Read the rest of the sentence to see if something in the text helps you discover the meaning.
3. Look for parts of the word that may be familiar to give you a clue about the meaning.
As you read books with your child, pick a couple of words and ask your child to explain what the word means.
