More for Parents! Here are some teaching tips for you.
Your beginning reader needs to recognize word patterns for short and long vowel sounds. Here are three ways to practice with your child:
1. Read these words: cap, cape - kit, kite - pet, Pete - hop, hope - cut, cute. Ask, “What makes each work look and sound the same?” and “What makes each word look and sound different?”
2. Think of other words that have short and long vowel patterns. Think of a, e, i, o, and u words, long and short. Write them on cards, talk about them, and practice reading them.
3. Read a book with your child and listen for words with short and long vowel sounds. Talk about the vowel sounds in each word: “Why is it long? Or “Why is it short?”
Have fun with the sights and sounds of everyday words. The more you practice together, the better your child will read!
