Perimeter is the distance around a figure or shape. In other words, perimeter is a measure of length. To measure length in real life, we use rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and tape measures.
One way to think about perimeter is to consider a fenced in space. Fences are built on the lines that define a space. The total length of the boundary or border is its perimeter. Before a board is cut or a brick is laid, the builder must estimate the cost and the amount of materials needed. Both these calculations are based on the length of the fence. To find the total length, a builder has to find the perimeter of the space.
How would you find the perimeter of an irregular shape garden with four straight edges that measure 10.1 centimeters, 7.3 centimeters, 4.1 centimeters and 7 centimeters?
To find the perimeter, simply add the lengths of the four straight edges.
\(10.1 + 7.3 + 4.1 + 7 = 28.5\)
The perimeter of the figure is 28.5 centimeters.
