Assessment can be a challenge while implementing engineering design projects in your classroom. It is important to focus on student understanding of the underlying science concepts and on the application of the engineering design process rather than on the success of their designs. This can be difficult as student knowledge and understanding is harder to observe, while it is much easier to analyze a design. Furthermore, since most of the work is performed in group settings, it can be hard to distinguish individual group members’ contributions.
In this video, teacher Jeanne Salchli discusses how her 4th grade students evaluate their peers.
