Each student must pick a color that represents them in this activity.
The game:
Open the Visualize It! tool and draw a rectangle on graph paper with an area that is an even number. When the drawing is complete, determine the area.
One student rolls the two dice. The resulting lower number is the numerator. The higher number is the denominator. This will form the player one’s fraction. Player one should then color in the fractional amount of the area of the rectangle.
Note: players are allowed to convert the roll to an equivalent fraction. If the two die result in the same number, the roll is ignored and the player rolls again.
Take turns with your partner rolling and coloring until the area of the rectangle is completely colored or four consecutive rolls result in number that allow for no further coloring.
Each player determines how much of the rectangle they have colored. Whoever colored the most wins!
Save and print out the rectangle. Then, you and your partner will share your work with class. Be ready to discuss how some fractions were used, converted, simplified, or acted on in other ways.
