Using a Number Line

Let’s look closer at some division with negative numbers by looking at a number line.

Simplify each problem below, and use Visualize It to mark and label the number’s approximate place on the number line.

b. (-5)/2
c. (-7) ÷ 4
d. ½ ÷ 2
e. 3 ÷ 4
f. 5/(-2)

After you've placed the answers on the number line, consider these questions:

What did you notice about the placement of (-5)/2 and 5/(-2) on the number line?
Without simplifying the fractions, do you think that (-23)/56 and 23/(-56) would also occupy the same space on the number line? Explain why.
