Through materials science and engineering design, we can control the flow of thermal energy for a variety of purposes. For example, the following two videos show real-world applications that employ thermal energy transfer to make things colder. To make things colder, you must remove thermal energy.
Choose one of the videos to watch. Then demonstrate how each of the objects featured in the videos (the cooling vest and thermosyphons) works at the particle level using Infograph It.
The Science of Keeping Cool
This video illustrates how a cooling vest can help keep people healthy by regulating body temperature in extremely hot conditions.
Preserving Permafrost
This video shows how thermosyphons can prevent the ground from warming, which helps to stabilize buildings and roads.
