As the scene opens, the witches are discussing their evil activities on the heath. One has been killing pigs, and the other is plotting revenge on a sailor’s wife by torturing her husband. All three cast an evil charm on the sailor. Banquo and Macbeth enter and are surprised by the appearance of the witches. Banquo wonders whether they are supernatural beings or humans. The witches greet Macbeth as the Thane of Glamis and Cawdor and the King of Scotland. Banquo asks Macbeth why he is so startled, and asks the witches to predict his own future. The witches tell Banquo his sons will be kings. The witches vanish.
