What is the evidence? Computer-generated models calculated from often vast datasets, based on physical laws and current understandings (i.e., real observational data) of the system being studied
What does it tell us? Data-based simulations allow scientists to make predictions, test a provided set of parameters, and model phenomena that are too big or small, or take too much time, or cannot be observed for some other reason.
Key limitations: Processing and storage capabilities of computer systems; models are based on assumptions; the complexities of phenomena are challenging to simulate fully
Example: Solar System Formation

This video discusses how supercomputers are used to generate models, such as the “Grand Tack” model, to explore particular aspects of planet formation.
